Dark Clouds Over Nestsjang

Øyvind Ravna

34 minutes

The Nenets (previously called Samoyed or Yurak) are indigenous peoples of the European North and West Siberia. The traditional culture of Nenets was ideally adapted to the environment of living in the Arctic. The Nenets represent the biggest group of so-called small-numbered indigenous tribal peoples of Russia. The economy of the Nenets and other Samoyedic people was traditionally mainly based on reindeer herding, fishing and sea mammal hunting. The film is about a small group of Forest Nenets, who continue to live in a traditional way, and about their conflict with the oil and gas companies in the region.
